Plans by the Nigerian Football Federation to hijack the thousands of dollars given to the Nigerian Olympics football team (Dreams team) for winning bronze at Rio 2016 was foiled by the team’s captain, Mikel Obi.
The money, $390,000 was given to the team by Japanese surgeon, Dr. Katsuya Takasu, after the bronze match 3-2 win over Honduras, but the NFF asked that the money be given to them in cash for distribution to the players.
Mikel however didn’t buy the idea and told the NFF that if they touch the money, the team will boycott the Honduras match and any other U-23 match in future.
He also contacted Dr. Katsuya not to listen to the NFF which is currently facing financial crunch but to handover the money directly to the players and managers who worked tirelessly at the competition.
The money was given to the team in two separate cheques bearing the names of Mikel Obi and coach Sampson Siasia.
